Lithium-ion batteries don't fail suddenly — they degrade a little every single charge cycle. Most of that damage comes from a handful of everyday habits that feel harmless but stress the battery chemistry far more than normal use does.
1. Charging to 100% every single time
Sitting at a full charge puts the battery under more voltage stress than sitting at 80%. If your phone supports it, use an 80% charge limit feature (most flagship Android and recent iPhones have one buried in battery settings) instead of always topping off overnight.
2. Letting it drain to 0%
Deep discharges are just as hard on the cells as overcharging. The sweet spot most manufacturers actually design around is keeping the battery roughly between 20% and 80% for daily use, and only running it down further occasionally.
3. Using cheap, uncertified fast chargers
A charger that doesn't properly negotiate voltage with your phone can deliver inconsistent power that generates extra heat — and heat is the single biggest accelerant of battery aging, more than charge cycles themselves.
4. Charging with a case on in direct sunlight
A thick case traps heat generated during charging instead of letting it dissipate. Charging in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill, or under a pillow compounds this significantly — take the case off if you're charging somewhere warm.
5. Leaving it plugged in for days at low use
Modern phones do manage this reasonably well with charge-cycling software, but a phone that sits plugged in around the clock for weeks still ages faster than one charged and unplugged normally, especially on older devices without smart charging management.
None of these habits will kill a battery overnight, but stacked together over a year or two they're the difference between a phone that still holds a full day's charge and one that needs a top-up by lunchtime.
